HELP CONTINUES TO POUR

IT may take at least one year to fully rehabilitate Pangasinan from the devastation it suffered from the fury of Typhoon Cosme on May 17.

Governor Amado Espino Jr. made this assessment as he signaled the start of the massive reconstruction and rehabilitation of the province.

 ”With the magnitude of the destruction, it may take us a year to fully recover from the calamity,” Espino told newsmen on Thursday after receiving part of the promised P40 million worth of donation in kind from the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Manila.

IT’S good news and bad news for the people of Dagupan City.

The good news: customers of the Dagupan City Water District (DCWD) will not be made to pay the planned increased water rate soon.

The bad news is the relief will be temporary. The DCWD, headed by General Manager Ramon Reyna, will still implement the rate adjustment six months later, on January 1, 2009.

LINGAYEN-The first trance of P40 million worth of medical equipment, supplies and medicines donated to Pangasinan by the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Manila arrived on Thursday.

      The donated equipment and supplies were turned over to Governor Amado Espino Jr. by businessman Rosendo So, president of the Eastern Pangasinan Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, also founder of partylist Abono.

LINGAYEN—Rep. Victor Agbayani of the 2nd district asked fellow Pangasinenses to be strong, united and remain steadfast in the face of numerous difficulties posed by the escalating prices of commodities and gave assurance of legislative help soon.

Speaking to newsmen at his residence on Sunday, Agbayani said Congress is deliberating on several urgent measures that are aimed at helping the people, especially the poor, overcome the present deepening economic crisis.

The surge in prices of commodities and construction materials here are not simply the result of the local supply and demand in the aftermath of the super Typhoon ‘Cosme’.

According to local traders, prices of construction materials have dramatically soared because suppliers in Manila have began selling at higher prices.

A professor of the University of the Philippines has expressed strong belief that Dagupan cannot be far behind in joining the “city of the future” league.

Dr. Perla Legaspi, professor of the National College of Public Administration and Governance at U.P, who spent half of her age in Dagupan, however, stressed that the journey towards becoming a city of the future is long and demands sacrifice from officials and citizenry.

POLICE TASK FORCE FORMED

BASISTA — A scam at a sub-office of the Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (Cenpelco) is being looked into as the possible motive behind the gun slaying of one of the coop’s top officials on Wednesday night.

This was unearthed by probers who went to the Cenpelco main office in San Carlos City and talked with other executives and employees of the coop a day after the slaying of Sandra Frias, manager of the Member Service Department and spokesperson of Cenpelco, one of the biggest cooperatives in the country.

BINMALEY–Upon seeing that substandard materials are being used to repair schools here damaged by Typhoon Cosme, Mayor Simplicio Rosario has immediately ordered a halt to the ongoing reconstruction work in two schools

       Rosario, an engineer and a contractor prior to entering public service, said he personally saw, while he was distributing free school bags and notebooks to school children in his town, that the steel being used by the contractor of the Department of Education (DepEd) is only 9 millimeters in size which is not enough to hold trusses.
