LINGAYEN—Team Pangasinan II has been performing creditably in various sports events since day one of the ongoing 2013 Region I Athletic Association (RIAA) Meet which opened February 24 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.
As of February 27, Pangasinan II ranked number one in the overall standing in both elementary and secondary categories with 151 points.
In close second is Ilocos Norte with 113.5 points.
Completing the top five slots are the schools division of La Union, Pangasinan I and Alaminos City occupying the third, fourth and fifth ranks with total points of 91, 70 and 49, respectively.
Pangasinan II won the gold in javelin throw and triple jump in secondary girls category, 110-meter hurdles for secondary boys, 400-meter dash elementary boys, 1,500-meter secondary boys, secondary girls basketball, sepak takraw girls category, lawn tennis-singles, secondary girls and boys doubles and girls-doubles in the secondary category, elementary and secondary boys in football.
In boxing, Pangasinan II boxers outpunched their opponents in the mosquito weight, pin weight and light flyweight categories.
For the Special Athletes category composed of differently-abled children, the La Union delegation grabbed the championship with San Fernando City at 2nd place, Laoag City in 3rd, and Urdaneta City and San Carlos City at 4th and 5th ranks.
Virginia S. Carane, a special education (SPED) teacher at the Special Child Learning Center in Dasol was very proud as she noted that her protégé, 17-year old special child Bernard Cabang, has qualified to compete in the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa after winning 1st place in the running long jump competition and 2nd place in the 400-meter dash.
As this developed, Atty. Verna Perez, head of the provincial government’s secretariat for the 2013 RIAA, said the conduct of the RIAA games has been going smoothly except for some minor health problems affecting some athletes.
Perez said such minor ailments are a usual occurrence in the prevailing hot weather condition.
She said the province’s medical team has been efficiently providing quick response in the playing venues and at the billeting areas. (PIO)
