THIRTEEN senior citizens of Dagupan can now see clearly again after Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and her family-owned CSI Group of Companies bankrolled their cataract operation performed by an eye specialist in Manila.
“I brought all our senior citizens to Manila last week so that they can undergo cataract operation for them to regain their eyesight,” said Fernandez.
She said she was moved by the sight of a senior citizen couple in one of the city’s barangays who live by themselves and cannot work to support themselves because they were already on the verge of going blind due to cataract.
“Kung makita ninyo ang dalawang mag-asawa na hindi na halos makagalaw at makapagtrabaho dahil hindi na makakita, ano ang gagawin ninyo?” she asked.
She immediately contacted a friend eye specialist and brought the couple and 11 other senior citizens to Manila where she had them undergo cataract operation at her own personal expense and that of her family’s company.
This week, she is bringing 13 more senior citizens to Manila to be operated on with their cataract and this time, Fourth District Rep. Gina De Venecia is helping so that more senior citizens from Dagupan can regain their eyesight.
Both officials agreed to help each other in funding the project after noting that based on the results of a recent checkup of senior citizens, it showed that 50 percent have cataract and are badly needing operations to prevent them from going totally blind.
A cataract procedure costs P30,000 per eye, a cost that only a few senior citizens of Dagupan can afford.
