Espino orders rehab of 8 government hospitals

LINGAYEN–Appalled by the state of government hospitals around the province, Governor Amado Espino Jr. has ordered the repair of buildings and upgrade initially of the facilities of eight of the 14 hospitals.

“Kung makikita nyo lang ang state ng mga hospitals natin, parang ayaw mong pa-ospital,” Espino said.

The hospitals given priority for immediate repairs and upgrading are the hospitals in San Carlos City, Lingayen, Manaoag, Umingan, Dasol, Alaminos, Tayug and Pozorrubio.

Despite two-hours of heavy rains, the Bangusan Street Party on Wednesday carried on with much enthusiasm and revelry.

Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, who represented her husband, Senate President Manny Villar; Gina de Venecia, wife of Pangasinan fourth district Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.; and former Guimaras Gov. Emily Lopez joined Dagupan Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and other city officials in leading the ceremonial lighting of the 600 grills set up along a one kilometer stretch of A.B. Fernandez Avenue.

MANGALDAN-This town is home to numerous professional and budding cyclists as well as its distinct big-wheeled pedicabs.

But the absence of regulation and the increase in the number of pedicabs, along with motorized tricycles, over the years has contributed to heavy traffic congestion problem, prompted the municipal government to adopt a number coding system for pedicabs starting last month.

“As of April 30, 2008, the total number of registered pedicab is 1,371 while motorized tricycle was 1,282,” said Alfonso Malapit, chief of the Business Tax on Licensing Department.

SOCIAL Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral has responded to the SOS sent by the Area I Vocational Rehabilitation and Training Center in Bonuan.

The location of the center by the beach shoreline is slowly eroding, moving the shoreline dangerously close to it. It is feared that the center will be wiped out in  5-7 years.

Cabral, who was in Dagupan on April 26, vowed to seek an immediate solution to the problem.

Who would have thought that a boy who completed only primary school would one day be a successful businessman today?

With just basic educational background to lean on, he started out as a mere woodcutter, earning P2 a day.  His life started to turn for the better when he decided to try his luck as an entrepreneur initially by buying and selling balut.

It was in the early 1980s when he and wife Leonora started making puto with only P70 as starting capital. Their eldest child also helped them sell puto every weekend.

Local government officials, architects, and engineers participated recently in a forum on the Architecture Act of 2004 held at the STADIA in Lucao in Dagupan City.

The event was aimed at promoting the spirit of professional alliance and good governance in line with the full implementation of Republic Act 9266, or the Architecture Act of 2004, said Architect Gerardo Gonzales, immediate past president of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Pangasinan-Dagupan chapter.

RA 9266, approved by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on March 17, 2004, lays down a more responsive and comprehensive regulation for registration, licensing and practice of architecture.

LINGAYEN—Athletes from Villasis composed of Jefferson Valdez, Albert Calvero and Robeno Javier emerged as champions in the first Pangasinan Pistay Dayat 2008 Amazing Triathlon Event (ATE) dubbed as ‘Lumbay Langoy, Bisikleta tan Batik’.

The trio registered an official time of 110 minutes and 14 seconds to win the event.

The tri-athletes swam from Bonuan beach to the mouth of Pantal River in Dagupan City, then mounted their bikes to race from Pugaro to the PNP Target Range in Lingayen, and finally sprinted from the PNP Target Range to reach the finish line at the beachfront area at the back of the Urduja House.

RATED bowling players from Manila dominated both Groups I and II in the Mayor Al Fernandez Bowling Cup held from April 22 to 27 at the CSI the City Mall as part of the Dagupan Bangus Festival.

About 100 players from Manila, Makati, Baguio, Batangas and other parts of the country participated in the tournament, also known as the 6th DATBI (Dagupan Tenpin Bowling Inc.) - CSI Invitational Open Championship.

Group 1, composed of veteran and seasoned players, was won by Benson Co of the Manila Tenpin Bowling Association (MTBA), bagging the grand prize of P60,000 Joonee Gatchalian of MTBA-Henrich bagged the first runner-up prize of P30,000 while Kevin Cu of TBAM (Tenpin Bowling Association of Makati)-PRIMA pocketed the second runner-up prize of P20,000.

LINGAYEN—The Bani National High School team is this year’s champion of the first-ever “Beach Volleybelles” held on April 30 at the Lingayen Beach front.

The Bani National High School’s Volleybelles brought home the grand prize of P5,000.

University of Cordillera placed second for P3,000 while University of Luzon captured the third slot for P2,000.

Others that saw action in the volleybelle competition were teams from Lingayen 1 and II and the Pangasinan National High School.
