A cruel joke

Ronaldo Castanaga

Kudos to the Dagupan City Legal Officer George Mejia, City Engineer Virginia Rosario and Decorp Atty. Numeriano Tanopo Jr for standing firmly on their ground as the last bastion to protect the rights of Bonuan Binloc residents against professional squatters defacing the serene beauty of the coastal beaches of Bonuan.

That area being on a public land should be open, not privately owned by a favored few with political connections.

At Bonuan Binloc, we need a buffer zone for tourism, unobstructed but accessible to the general public and to our local fishermen to dock and unload their early morning catch.

It is basic for the City Government of Dagupan to grant building permits only for a worthy cause that insures safe, efficient and effective use of public lands for the general welfare and well-being of its residents.

It’s true everybody can apply for a piece of property on a public land but it is an inherent right for the City Government of Dagupan to prioritize its ownership to local Binloc residents before others especially to the poor and the marginalized citizenry.

To grant a building permit and ownership to a piece of prime property (napaka mahal yan at libre pa) to Mayor Macanlalay, a resident alien, is a cruel joke to the residents of Bonuan.

The Pinoy’s patriotism

Rafael L. Oriel, Jr.
27 Feb 2008

Mr. Carrera, all I am asking are names and I never ask for evidence. I am afraid you are confused and I wonder why… because as you can see, my previous posting is very short and easy to understand.

In fact, Punch even put a title of the issue at the top, “Give names of patriotic Filipinos.” I guess you are trying hard to muddle the real whole issue with irrelevant responses, terms and expressions.

Also, I find it weird your imagination of twisting our comments in the past so that you can draw a picture to suit your misleading information, something that is quite different to what really transpired at that time.

I asked for names because you said that there are only few patriotic Filipinos, the rest are corrupt. Ang pagkaintindi ko sa sinabi mo ay parang dadalawa lamang ang klase ng mga Filipinos, patriotic at corrupt.

What you said sounds like you can count with your fingers the Filipinos who are patriotic and millions upon millions of Filipinos are corrupt.

I find it hard to believe and to accept that out of the 80 million Filipinos, there are only few patriotic Filipinos. Ang saklap namang pakinggan, di ba? It sounds pessimistic but that is your opinion. It is questionable and debatable. I wonder how other Filipinos feel about it.

I like to think that it is the other way around. I like to believe that out of 80 million Filipinos, there are only few that are corrupt, the rest are good people who love their country very much. Ang pagka-alam ko ay mas higit na marami ang mga tunay na Filipinos, sa isip, sa salita at sa gawa.

My late grandfather loves to tell me stories when I was a kid about World War II especially the bravery and patriotism of the Filipinos during the war.

I believe, what is happening in our country and in many parts of the world is a continuation of the battle between good and evil as always since the time of Adam and Eve.

Sana naman ay masugpo na ang mga problema sa ating bansa lalo na ang illegal drugs, graft and corruptions, plunder, killings, robbery, kidnappings, hold-ups at mga iba pang mga criminal activities.

GMA and JDV on CORRUPTION:

GMA says she is against corruption while JDV says it is time for “Moral Revolution” or in plain language “it is time to stop being CORRUPT”.

If indeed GMA is against corruption, what she should have done everyday from the time she became the president was to “fire out” or the justice department should have indicted the corrupt officials in the government and the corrupt businessmen/women. There are enough of them every day of the year.

Cicero said, “The function of wisdom is to discriminate between good and evil.”

Albert Einstein said, “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

Molly Ivins said, “I believe that ignorance is the root of all evil and that no one knows the truth.”

Pearl S. Buck said, ”When good people in any country cease their vigilance and struggle, then evil men prevail.”

Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

A Comelec Chairman said, “Secretary, you have 200 in this deal.”

Commission on Higher Education Chair said, “She is evil.”

Albay Governor said, “She may be a bitch but she’s the luckiest bitch around.”

The first Ateneo alumnus to become President said that the groups behind his ouster now realize their mistake. He said that he was ready and willing to lead again as a caretaker president if the second Ateneo alumnus to become President is toppled from power. Buti na lang ang nakasulat sa Saligang Batas na hahalili ay Vice-President, hindi Ateneo alumnus.

The big question we need to ask, “Are Filipinos ready and willing to accept his return to power?” I do not think so.

Kahit sabihin niyo na ang mga Filipinos ay makakalimutin pero sa palagay ko ang plunder conviction ay mahirap kalimutan, di ba?

Hindi ko pa nga nakakalimutan iyong sabi ng kanilang unibersidad na Ateneo, “To understand the soul of the university what shaped it and where it came from, where it is going and where it can take you — it is essential to understand its motto, Lux in Domino, or “Light in the Lord.”

Blaise Pascal said, “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”

A wise religious leader said, “Mixing religion with politics is like mixing ice cream with horse manure. It doesn’t hurt the manure, but it ruins the ice cream.”

I have a strong feeling that the best person to ask if this is true is the Archbishop whose first love is farming. The ice cream is ruined when a Bishop drops invitation to lead People’s Power 1 Mass at Our Lady of Peace Shrine on EDSA. Ice cream, anyone?

The first Protestant to become President said, “The EDSA revolt is a continuing struggle and that there should be no letup in the fight against irregularities. There are oligarchs, dynasties, opportunists we are yet to banish from our political and economic life.”

One thing I like about Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats is that it is not monopolized by Catholics in airing their sides on political issues unlike the CBCP. Onli in the Pilipins.

Obviously, everybody is eager to give their own opinion but not necessarily solutions to the national problems. My admiration goes to those who unselfishly share their wisdom and knowledge to help others especially in discerning the truth to make better decisions.

Total disappointments come from those who try to mislead others.

As always since the time of Adam and Eve, it is all about the fight between the good and the evil. I have high hopes that because of the overall goodness in people’s hearts, the greater good will ultimately prevail over evil.

Voltaire said, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Ikaw anong say mo?

You are right. Pare-pareho silang lahat. They have their chances to make the Pinas a better place.

22 years after Edsa 1. Cory had her chance, but she blew it, nagpayaman lang siya. Now she is joining the Patalsikin si Gloria.

Erap, the plunderer, wants to govern again. Not a chance.

Gloria is doing a great job, with the economy. Let her finish her term and let’s choose a true good leader in 2010.
Lozada gave away land to his family under Phil Forest at a very cheap price. He is a very rich person.

Your current SP article Bangus Fest to go regional mentioned the city mayor of Dagupan …”Fernandez is set to leave for the United States soon on an official mission to invite overseas Dagupeños as balikbayans will also be among the major target visitors.”

His trip to the US means well for the city economy however, he could save taxpayers money by just fielding ads and other promos at the various Philippine consulates in Mainland Asia, Europe, and the US touting upcoming events for the year in his city.

Another way of advertising the city is thru tour guides and agencies worldwide. Savvy travelers from all walks of life looking for new adventures browse thru handouts and magazines in the Travel Offices.

It is only a suspicion that he may want to breathe cleaner and fresher air and ditto with water.

Also in your current SP article Bangus Fest to go regional well, Dagupan should add “Oyster and Shrimp Boil Fest” in their yearly event.

The city should not underestimate the power of oyster and shrimp farmers they bring to the local economy. We in the US are always clamoring for other fresh morsels other than bangus.

Here you go again Mr. Oriel- you need names, evidence, as usual. With your mentality, GMA, the illegal drug and gambling lords and all the corrupt will be very happy. I know you are the son of a lawyer, so your usual defense of your argument is the need for evidence.

You advised Ms. Ric to check out the funding for the construction of school classrooms before she can say anything about the lack of classrooms. You said before that Erap is more corrupt and that I am not patriotic or I am part of the problem because I always post the bad things happening in the Philippines.

Now, you want to know if I am patriotic. Let the readers judge if a person like you or GMA who just keep quiet about or condone the bad happenings in the country is patriotic than one who exposes it.

Is that the Parliamentary system you are talking about? I hope not. Go ahead and join GMA because to you she is still not corrupt - there is no evidence.

Overseas bowlers vs. locals

Aurelio A. Casillan
26 Feb 2008

Subject is bowling to Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The national bowling invitational tournament will attract more Filipino overseas residing in the United States.

Most Filipino organizations or associations have bowling leagues every Friday and Saturday. I’m sure this tournament will become a prestigious event. The tournament will be overseas Filipino Pangasinan bowler versus Pangasinan bowler; the overseas Filipino bowler champion meets the Pangasinan bowler champion for individual championship. Make the tournament be for single, double and team competition.

Mr. Carrera, a Punch Forum blogger or is it boggler?, said, “What is saddening is that there are only few patriotic Filipinos, the rest are corrupt especially among high officials.”

The big question we need to ask, “Is Mr. Carrera one of the few patriotic, mga tunay na Filipinos, sa isip, sa salita at sa gawa?”

It will be interesting to know the names of these few Filipinos he claimed to be patriotic. It will be nice if he can show us a listing of their names so that we can fully support them especially because few patriotic Filipinos out of more than 80 millions are very rare like diamonds.
