A great man flew into town
By Gonzalo Duque
A GREAT man quietly came to town recently.
You who have been following the national news are familiar with this rare breed of a Filipino.
Antonio Meloto, winner of the world-famous Ramon Magsaysay Award for providing millions of houses to millions of Filipinos, was the guest of Gov. Spines, Mayor Al Fernandez and Mayor Rey Velasco.
He came to town to guide our local executives in properly implementing their housing programs.

The leader’s language
By Al S. Mendoza
WHAT is a good leader?
One sage says a good leader is not what to do but how to be.
Does that apply to our beloved Guv Spines?
I think so.
Guv Spines says he is a full-bloodied Pangasinense and, to prove that, he wants to be one among his people always in word and in deed.
I’ve had dealings with Guv Spines on many occasions and I found him to be truly a Pangasinense.

In search of San Fabian’s identity
By Marifi Jara
MY town’s fiesta has once again come and gone.
It was the usual routine. Some program and ballroom dancing in the evenings, catered to various groups - barangay officials, the market community, balikbayans, civic organizations. Then there’s the perya at the huge vacant lot across the church. It is surrounded by stalls peddling all sorts of dry goods (so many products flooding in from China!) and food (so many of them selling tupig and cheap hamburger!), and along the side facing the highway, a line of makeshift joints for videoke singing. And what Filipino fiesta would be complete without the crowning of the queen and her court, with of course the subsequent parade around town.

Outstanding fruit varieties for the Ilocos Region
By Sosimo Ma. Pablico
Four outstanding fruit varieties have been identified by researchers of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac, Ilocos Norte to perform well in the Ilocos Region.
Already released as varieties for commercial production, these outstanding varieties are the MMSU-SRO Sweet Jackfruit, Aglibut Sweet Tamarind, and the Prima and Corcino mango varieties, according to Dr. Gliceria Pascua, leader of the research team.
The two new mango varieties would provide diversity in mango for green, processing and fresh fruits, said Dr. Pascua. They can also be used as mother plants for the improvement of the Carabao mango.

Looking for God
By +Oscar V. Cruz D. D.
Now few people are looking for God—searching for His reality, asking for His presence. No, they are not questioning either their faith as a whole nor their belief in God in particular. They only feel somehow dismayed when God does not show His omnipotent power even when people are at their worst, much less does He demonstrate His anger towards capital sinners running around and bringing havoc to society. In the presence of evil men and women, many people simply feel somehow at a loss when God is precisely absent and nowhere to be found.

Lousy officiating
By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.
I HAVE said it before and I’ll say it once more: the most controversial yet most important persons in sports competitions, particularly the ball games like basketball, and volleyball, baseball, are essentially the referees, umpires, arbiters, timers and scorers.
They are either one of the prime factors for the success of the affair, or the destroyer of the event.
These had happened many times in the past.
It happened again last Tuesday evening during the 2008 Mangaldan Inter Barangay Basketball Tournament in the match between barangay Buenlag and Guantang.

Babytalk
By Emmanuelle
PUCKER the lips for the tsup tsup then stretch them wide for the mwah mwah. Smack a yummy yum yum for a mouth-watering fingerdip; spit out a yackity yuck for that nasty icky taste. Duh for the dumb act, ahhh if it dazzled and wawawi if you are staggered. Please meme the bebe to sleep. Momo, say hello to the mamaw. And stamp the foot nonononono to counter stamp the foot likelikelikelikelike!
If you think you are past beyond baby talk, you’ve got another think coming.

My condolences to Atty. Armand Montessa.
I remember him as kind, loving, understanding and great teacher, mentor and Dean. He was our Dean, Commerce Department in Lyceum Northwestern, way back 1984~1988. During our graduation day, he told us that he wishes and hopes that our batch will have reunion in USA. It is sad that his wish and hope never happened.
Please convey my prayers and sympathy to the Montessa Family.

Wow! That’s a very good experiment. It can really help our country’s economy. Can I ask one question? How many times do you have to feed tilapia with bangus bones each day?
