Punchline

I, too, can dream, can’t I?

By Ermin F. Garcia Jr.

As the New Year sets in, I cannot but wonder what’s in  store  for  our people in Pangasinan. I wish there are barometers to go by but I don’t see any. There being none, I hasten to share my wish (or dream) list.

For Pangasinan, I pray that -

1.  Our province’s newly elected public officials will come to realize that unless and until they wean our people from jueteng, a big number of our populace will remain unmotivated to become productive.

Rizal and his new Knights

By Jun Velasco

WE observe by government edict Rizal Day today. Has it occurred to you how the idea men, the organizers of this movement started the entire thing, this nationwide, nay, worldwide   movement that exalts the Filipino’s capacity for greatness?  Let’s thank Dr. Jose Rizal. He has shown what’s best in the Filipino.

No Filipino hero has gained such world fame, such tremendous popularity - or notoriety, in case you belong to the few antis — as the well loved martyr we remember and honor today.  December 30, l896 was his day of execution in the hands of his Spanish captors at the Luneta or Bagumbayan or more fittingly, Rizal Park.

New politics will make BF president

By Gonzalo Duque

THE advent of information technology in our country will definitely change the color of our political system.

The so-called great unwashed will no longer be pushed around. Their voices will be heard.

In this sense, our forecast is that the kind of political leaders that rules the land will change. The kind of MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando will become more acceptable and easier to “sell” during elections.

Old or new, laugh

By Al S. Mendoza

A new year comes to us in two days.

What is new?

How can it be new?

When is new new?

Who can make it new?

New is something we either usually abhor or welcome with open arms.

For example, we abhor things that change our routine.  Habits die hard, indeed.

Lots of blessings to thank for at 69

By Sosimo Ma. Pablico

When one turns 69 and looks back through time, one finds that indeed so many things are worth thanking for.  Having  reached  this age and still running around, so to speak, doing  the one and only thing he wanted most even when he was still a high school kid — journalism - is already a blessing not so many are fortunate to reach.

From No. 1 to No. 6

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

THE Southeast Asian Games, held every two years and with only 11 nations participating, is considered as the smallest ala-Olympic Games in the world.

The countries are Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, East Timor and our country Philippines.

We entered the games in 1977, and after three tries, we almost bagged the overall championship in 1981, just one gold medal away from dislodging Indonesia.

Sad but true

By Charmaine Dizon

On my way home from Baguio where I am studying, I preoccupied myself watching Christmas lights and lanterns displayed in front of the houses along the road.

I felt   an unexplainable happiness within me. It’s exhilarating to know that a lot of people are celebrating Christmas and are excited for the coming of a new year. Yet, I also felt sad because I know that there are people out there who can not celebrate Christmas and  New Year all because they do not have the money.

Time

By Emmanuelle

EACH time we crossover from December 31 to January 1, it is like seeing Alice of Wonderland fame opening a door from the present to future time.

Try to imagine this scene.

One day, Alice finds a door on which is carved the two faces of the Roman god, Janus.  According to myth, this god used one face to look back to the past and the other face to look ahead to the future.

Nida Rofe
30 Dec 2007

Kervie,

Ang masasabi ko rin ay ito, at least, Mr. Pontaoe was also one man in the forum in whom the sense of humor was highly developed. This man was a great blessing to his comrades’ forum posters and readers.

He could see the ridiculous side of every hardship, every phase of camp life, and every misfortune. Pessimistic yet optimistic, cheerful. He could find joke where most men would never dream it could exist.

Even the most trivial incident he would turn to the most humorous account. In this world today, everybody had the blues - that is nearly everybody - for there were few who had been born with a cheery - good humored temperament and with the disposition to see the bright, happy side of everything.

Laughter, good humored can improve the lives of many discouraged, problematic, and sick people. We can’t suppress the spirit of laughter. If God gave upon us for development, use them. It’s good gift to bring good cheer to fellow men. Allow other to dispense happiness.

What a shame to sit at the table among  the people who are most under our influence, and look glum and dump, as we had been summoned to eat dead crow.

Life is very short and rapidly changing, and it will not be long till some of those chairs will be empty. We ought to treasure up the happiest incidents, stories, beautiful ideas, sad and funny jokes, to repeat at meal time.

“BANISH THE BLUES AND BAD BLAMES.” We all need the fountain of physical strength, but of mental and spiritual recreation.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND GOD BLESS…
