If Governor Amado “Espin-off” Espino could be believed, he was the exclusion and Arroyo waited for him to depart the gathering of vultures before she made her move. Right on! It’s like that not-so-smart 3rd grader telling the teacher his homework was eaten by the goat.

Does he have the raw courage and outright honesty not to accept P500,000 pesos being forced his hand? Highly unlikely. If the priestly Governor Panlilio accepted it, how much more with him?

He can keep on denying but in this circus-like-atmosphere with Arroyo calling the shots, who will believe him? Only if he were Pingkoy Duque.

“THE 40th TOKYO MOTOR SHOW” by AL S. MENDOZA, PCE Jr.

Where is the much awaited report of the PCE Jr. Mr. Al S. Mendoza on the cars of the future, his test drive at the Fuji Speedway, and his five (5) minute interview of the world’s most powerful man in the automotive industry?

Is the PCE Jr. still writing (or inventing) his report up to this time for accuracy? The PCE Jr indicated that the 5-minute interview is one-on-one, so I can understand why the report is lengthy especially if he will also write about his performance at the SPA and the round of golf with Mr. Rene So. 007 suggest “KEEP IT TECHNICAL”.

Arroyo did the right this time around. I will have to agree - pardoning Estrada - is not for political expediency, but a necessity to heal the wounds of the country, although, almost all Filipinos have a hard time to swallow.

Bury the hatchet, guys, and move on. Estrada was convicted. The Philippines can show to the world, that contrary to popular belief, the justice system still exists.

But, we should not forget as crooked as Estrada is, he has the balls to face his accusers. Unlike Marcos who took flight in the middle of the night to escape the wrath of the Filipinos. Estrada could face himself in the mirror, he’s not a coward.

And those doubting Thomases, who conceived it bad, that pardoning Estrada started a precedent like releasing the rest of the felons in prison for equity. It’s wishful thinking. Arroyo, I believe, in her right mind, will never do that. They are so different from Estrada. He was a president!

It takes a village

The barangay may be the smallest government unit but it is a political structure that is deeply rooted in the Filipino soul.

In pre-colonial Philippines, long before the country’s progression towards the concept of nationhood, barangays were already in place. Our forefathers formed small communities and each was headed by a village chief known as the datu.

The colonizers, recognizing the value and strength of these small communities, built bigger political units that were still based on the barangay.

During the Spanish era, most of the datus evolved as cabezas de barangays, and they were mainly tasked to collect taxes. Barangays were then clustered into towns.

The barangay, believed to have come from the word balangay which refers to Malayo-Polynesian boats that plied Philippine coasts for trade and eventual settlement, became popularly referred to as barrios during the American period.

Speaker JdV’s serious dilemma

By Ermin Garcia Jr.

Up until the end of the 13th Congress, Speaker Joe de V remained the most envied congressman around.

Today, his is an image not only of an embattled political leader but one who finds himself divided between his loyalty to his President and his undying love for his family.

Hence for the first time in their lives, his political allies and detractors are both counting their blessings, thankful that they are not in his shoes today.

Dawel-Pantal-Lucao is one good example of infrastructure. We have so many places in Dagupan to build on and have more infrastructures. Our coastline in Bonuan needs to be revitalized, build more towers, hotels and apartments.

Just like Dubai expanding their creeks and building towers. What we need are investors to build mega projects and offer them 100 years residency for foreigners or what we call here as lease hold properties.

This article, “Dagupan City may copy Shanghai’s urban renewal” is of great interest and fascinating as well and we all hope that the city officials who saw the economic benefit will move forward to implement their action plan.

More power to Dagupan to copy and develop successful global entrepreneurship to suit the local flavor.

Let’s cross our fingers however, that to copy and improve someone’s success will change a few narrow-minded characters.

New traffic stall at CSI Lucao

By Gerry Garcia

After being unconditionally pardoned or given executive clemency by PGMA, former President Erap E sounded more relieved than contrite when he said he has had enough of politics after decades of service to the nation as town mayor, senator, vice-president and finally as president.

At age 70, Erap says all he wants is to care for his 103-year old mother who is now on the verge of death.

But there are people opposed to Arroyo’s grant of clemency to the former actor, like  ex-president  FVR  who said  Erap has  not yet admitted  his guilt despite having been convicted and sentenced by the Sandigan Bayan— a necessity required by a grant of executive pardon.
