Well taken…

Well taken, Mr. Carrera you said, Most bizarre engineering analysis and planning of the century”… And you continued on to say, “I pity those engineering students taking or took their classes under professors or instructors with such “bright ideas”.

Bizarre as it may be for the ideas of the city engineers but it was done at the turn of the century in Chicago, levees were built in N.O., etc.

In answer to the scientists that discovered the atomic bomb if they are well traveled like moi? I supposed Messrs. Fermi, Oppenheimer, Seaborg, Franck were local boys who after a cattle round-up decided to have a Manhattan in a NM local pub and out of the blue they decided to become scientists so they wrote a letter to FDR announcing their intent to discover a huge fireball to impress the world. And the rest is history.

Since you do not believe in field trips to learn and see “new” things all the space travels are for naught. Correct?

And you are right that people’s intelligence is not determined by the size of the land where they live or the size of their, a…  but how they can take in what they dish out.

This latest revelation on the AWAI property purchase encompassing MetroState/Magsaysay Park enterprising mess is more proof there are rascals openly looting the country without fear of accountability.

Is this an example of doing what the national leadership code of conduct is, or is it simply - a culture going berserk? Better still, are we Filipinos willing to demand accountability from elected officials, or have we totally resigned ourselves to swallow their scam spree?

There is a time every one of us facing such dilemma must be able to stand up to tell officials their diadem of dishonesty must come to an end. We must muster the courage to say enough is enough, dishonesty will no longer be condone and must be eradicated from society once and for all.

Our system of government has been perverted by individuals motivated by a desire enriching themselves at the expense of a citizenry wallowing in despair, degradation and hunger.

This out of control machinery has got to go if we Filipinos still dream of living in a country where there is hope and a future. There must be some principled and courageous corps members left in the PNP and AFP who do not subscribe blindly to what their hierarchy describe as ‘respecting the chain of command’.

Once the chain of command becomes dishonest, it is one that needs to be replaced. It is a misnomer and should not carry the day for those who honestly believe theirs is a duty to protect the people and country.

To do otherwise and continue respecting a corrupted command who steal from the people, rape the constitution with impunity and offering no hope for a people longing for self respect, it no longer deserves the trust of the people. Their image will be no better than an animal that bites the hand that feeds it.

Engineering learned only by traveling and copying is dangerous. An engineer is not a traveling photographer.

A professional engineer uses his or her mind to “travel” through the application of scientific principles from books, technical and professional journals, and codes and standards, laws and regulations.

Engineering is not “pa-kopia kopia” as some may suggest and always involves “economic feasibility” aside from the technical, environmental and cultural feasibility. It is not a matter of what is and is not doable or else the idea becomes a dream that can never be realized just like the proposed Atlantis Project in Alaminos City.

Is the idea to put up levees for a 10,000 year flood design for Dagupan feasible? What is a 10,000-year flood design period anyway? How do you plan and design even a 100-year flood protection structures for Dagupan only? By flooding the adjacent towns and cities?

I must be not up to date in my profession. I need to attend seminars from great dreamers and travelers.

Ms Jara,

You hit the nail right on the head with your statement, “What we need is a deeper cultural change”.

And it should not be just a change in attitude towards dogs and pet care either but moving the society towards 21st century attitude as a whole. It will be a daunting task we all know but there is nothing to lose in trying.

Dear Editor,

Chicago’s nickname is known in USA as Chitown as previously posted. And Chicago’s China town is approx. 1.6 km from Wabash Ave. in the downtown business center.

Happy trails!

(Editor: Sorry about that error.)

Mr. Ramos,

I hate to tell you this: What I said was bizarre, I did not say it is not doable. Please consult your dictionary.

I know and everybody reading your posts know by now that you are well traveled and that you learn only by traveling just like when you said that to know that the Philippines is much better off than Nigeria or Iraq or Iran, you need to go to those places.

You do not need to keep on emphasizing that to me. I do not believe it. I believe that I can learn without actually seeing those places that you are telling me, just like the time I spent at the former Dagupan Colleges when I studied engineering.

When I attended seminars in the CONUS, we did not actually go to those places that were cited as examples of the subject matter.

Based on your usual insinuation that you have to travel to learn, I wonder why some of those scientists who spent most of their time in research laboratories made startling discoveries. Are those scientists that discovered the atomic bomb well traveled like you Mr. Ramos? Can you comment on that please, SIR?

Guam may be small in your perception but people’s intelligence is not determined by the size of the land where they live or the size of their ass.

Philanthropist Rose Marie Jimenez de. Arenas sponsored the presentation of the first and only live concert in Manila by world tenor Luciano Pavarotti during his first Asian tour last March 21, 1994 at the Philippine International Convention Center, CCP Complex.

She sent the following message to The PUNCH on hearing the news of Pavarotti’s death.

“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the untimely demise of world tenor maestro Luciano Pavarotti, whose legendary musical prowess remains unparalleled. He is a great loss, not only to the world of music, but to humanity because he is one of the few luminaries in this generation who broke cultural and social barriers, and was highly esteemed as a citizen of the world.
