BARANGAY officials in the 4th District, home turf of House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr., are against a proposal to postpone the October 29 barangay elections.

The local officials aired their position during the recent thanksgiving party hosted by De Venecia for his supporters in the province.

The official stance of the barangay officials will be collated through a survey that will be conducted by De Venecia’s office.

There are calls to move the October 29 schedule to either May or October next year, to coincide with the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao elections ostensibly to save on election costs.

De Venecia said even the Commission on Elections is inclined to back the postponement because there are still ballot boxes that are annexed to  protest cases   and   several bills have also been filed in the House of Representatives calling for the postponement.

“The key is whether the Senate will approve it,” De Venecia said.

A postponement, once approved, will require an amendment to existing law, which will have to be approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and signed by the President.

De Venecia said the final decision will likely be issued in two weeks after congressmen and senators have completed consultations with their respective constituents. #
