“La Tour de Farce”

Mr. Carmichael Besitan:

Hold it there! Don’t get any funny ideas. Give Jazy a break, will you? At his age he needs a truck load of steroids to compete. It’s the name of the game in that not so becoming honorable sport in athletic competition. It would be so amazing . . . so unbelievable . . . so far out if he can come up clean thru the rigorous mountain climb. With such contestants under the microscope, Jazy is better off in the Philippines or Guam where he will not be scrutinized from the mouth down to his butt.

Le Tour de France . . . or . . . Le Tour de Farce?

I just want to comment on what I observed with the new administration in Dagupan City. It seems the new administration is looking for any wrongdoing of the past administration.

First, the closing of the ongoing construction of the Magsaysay Center. What will happen now with the expected income of the city from the rental and the business taxes of probable tenant if it would take years to resolve the controversy? Millions of pesos will be lost, why not settle it amicably or make some revisions to the contract where there seems to be not favorable to the government.

Let’s forget the political side of the controversy so that our city will move for the better. The city council should initiate a move to settle the controversy.

Look at Urdaneta City, they’re about to overtake Dagupan now, they are now on the way to First class status. Businesses are sprouting fast in Urdaneta, I heard that another big business branch in a 49-hectare along the highway going to Sta. Barbara will be put up soon, not to mention the proposed SM near the new city hall.

Second, the parking lot at the Malimgas Market. Think of better alternative so that it will benefit the city government.

Let’s forget the past election, think for the future!

I could never agree with your unicameral parliamentary system of government, Mr. Oriel, for the sole reason of my simplemindedness.

By choice, I’ve lived in my adopted community with a population of barely 6,000. With one stop light in town, three banks, three gas stations, one grocery store, we’re considered “big time” compare to the neighboring districts.

The closest domestic airport is about an hour away but our roads do work, and I do have the option of driving, taking public transportation or even walking anywhere unhindered by potholes, uneven pavers, or never ending construction.

And even way out here in the boondocks, I can still exercise my right as a citizen of this little district and vote for local as well as national issues without the fear of being swallowed up by a bigger district, or worst, being stifled by any one system.

In contrast, your simple Canadian parliamentary system allowed the elimination of 360 municipalities in Ontario alone, which is nearly half of the province’s total, from 1995 to 2001.

Yes, I guess life would be a little simpler if you can just do away with localities with a simple strike of a pen. (Not quite the same simplemindedness I had in mind Mr. Oriel.)

“Poor urban planning and lack of foresight and long range plan” has become the norm in the Philippines. Let me rephrase that. We have the propensity for getting way over our heads when it comes to planning and/or budgeting. (And I am not talking about palatial bathrooms.)

The notorious road problems we have all over the Philippines are just a drop in the bucket.

To be closer to home, let me cite another example. There are children in Pangasinan whose classroom is so uninhabitable that they had to move the class outdoor. This school (Alcala’s Macayo Elem.) wasn’t ravaged by the current series of storms, but rather a left over aftermath of previous storms the previous year.

One would think this would make it to the local, provincial, or national government’s priority for funding, but I guess this project, along with others like it, is not ambitious enough.

No, Mr. Oriel, a mere 700 million pesos will not cure the nation’s endemic ailments, but on that same token, I can’t help but wonder how many classrooms in Pangasinan will PhP700 million be able to repair.

I wonder how many Pangasinense children will PhP700 million save if booster shots are offered free of charge.

I wonder what kinds of impact will PhP700 million make to Pangasinan families if there is such a thing as housing assisted programs.

I wonder how far will PhP700 million stretch to as far as offering career-training programs free of charge to all Pangasinenses in need.

Chalk it up to simplemindedness again, but I cannot comprehend the logic behind this superfluous Alaminos project and how fast your favorite president unabatedly endorsed its funding when everywhere you look in our province alone is a testimony to a dire need for change.

Simply put, a change from substandard living to an acceptable way of living.

Mr. Oriel Jr, being simple minded, would you please be sweet and succinct in your rebuttal. It is understood that you must have been an essay champ of your school but for heaven’s sake, you can easily lose me with all the verbiage Or best yet, apply to SP as a volunteer or cameo columnist. Let’s see how far you would get.

Hi to all Sunday Punch columnists and most especially to Mang Jess Garcia, Jr.

I am a Pangasinense based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. I always see to it that I get to read the news on my native province every week. I was so delighted when I read another achievement of your son Jazy Garcia upon winning the Guam bikefest.

What surprises me is that he is in his late 30s, am I right Mang Jess? And he still manages to outpedal most young guns. I know Jazy sir, in fact he is my old buddy and classmate in Mangaldan National High School. I used to spend some time in your place in Brgy. Buenlag. Baka po pwede pa siya Le Tour de France, pakitanong lang po. Biro lang po, pero sana magkaroon din ng isang Pinoy na makasali sa nasabing famous annual event sa Europe.

Please extend my warm regards to Jazy! More power! God Gless

Thank for you, Mr. Delfin for making me aware of the difference in character between the two women nevertheless, they can be assertive role models to Pinays in their own way as much as you and I who differ in ideas on who can be role models for our own respective young family.
