Not “Barbarians”, please

Antonio Manuel
31 July 2007

I am a frequent visitor of this paper’s site and I am often thrilled to read the brave comments being made (and continues to make) by Mr. Pontaoe.

However, there was something which irritated me and made me restless on my seat, and being a native of Sta. Barbara, I felt obliged to stand up for my town mates when they are being attacked, insulted and degraded.

I am referring to the July 31, 2007 comments of Mr. Pontaoe on Mayor Velasco. In the said letter he blatantly insulted the good people of Sta. Barbara by calling them “BARBARIANS”.

I am not sure if you are pretending to be omniscient (all-knowing) or you are just as empty and (ignorant) as your words. If you refer to the people of Sta. Barbara the most polite and proper way to address them is simply “people of Sta. Barbara” or “residents of Sta. Barbara” but never “Barbarians”.

“Barbara” is a proper name. It is the name of the town’s patron “Santa Barbara”. Do not corrupt and use in vain the name of people whose lives are worthy of emulation just like the name of our beloved Sta. Barbara.

If there is a human being who is worthy of being called “barbarian” Mr. Pontaoe, it should be you because barbaric people destroy and attack people existing in peace and harmony and you just did that.

My mother taught me to always watch my words, be polite and respectful. And, most importantly, to shut up when I have nothing good to say. I hope you learned from that.
