The business of “subject”

Mr. Fernandez, my previous posting is in response to the issue being discussed which is the word “subject”.

The other gentleman said, “May I point to you that there is no such a king in the Philippines and Mr. Spin is definitely not about to become the king of Pangasinan.” and you responded, “Now I know, there is no King in Pangasinan. Duh!”.

I can assure you that I did not misunderstand the context of your statement but I am concerned that other readers of the worldwide Punch forum who do not know anything about the history of Pangasinan will definitely get the impression from your discussions that there never was a royalty in Pangasinan in the past unless clarified otherwise.

I hope that my previous post can do the clarification for them.

Mr. Fernandez, my previous post is also an indirect response to the other gentleman who went ballistic with the word “subject”. I got the feeling that he does not like the idea of being a subject because it implies allegiance to a personal sovereign such as a monarch.

He said, “It is your prerogative if you choose to be a “subject” of anyone. Any free person would choose otherwise.

Americans declared their independence because they did not want to be the subjects of the English king. I wonder how the Filipinos would have felt as subjects of Hirohito had Japan not lost the war.”

He sounds like the word subject is a very demeaning word that must be avoided at all cost. In response, I like to say that Japan lost the war. Period.

In addition, let us not forget the fact that Filipino subjects in the Kingdom of Pangasinan during the time of kings Andres Malong and Juan de la Cruz Palaris are all Filipino/Pangasinense heroes because they died fighting against the Spaniards.

For sure, the Filipino/Pangasinense heroes do not want to be the subjects of the king of Spain but they are loyal subjects of the kings of Pangasinan who led the rebellions against the Spanish conquerors.

I like also to add that I do not mind to be a subject. I love to be one of the subjects of Jesus Christ, the King of kings.

Godspeed to all.
