Badly Wanted: Good Persons

By +Oscar V. Cruz D. D.

In its Pastoral Statement on the 2007 National Elections dated 8 July 2007, the CBCP made a collective pronouncement on the lights and shadows that accompanied the said democratic exercises. In rather clear and relatively few words, the Episcopal Conference pointed out both the admirable as well as the censurable factors that accompanied the political event as far as their ethical elements and moral dimensions were concerned.

Mr. Oriel, Jr. Your knowledge of Pangasinan’s history is awesome. You are impressive. My hat is off to you.

Other Forum readers may as well agree with me, that you are in the know. Keep up your history prowess. Our province needs your expertise.

For you to say however, that I am, in your words, easily misinformed and jumped into conclusion because I wrote, “Now I know, there is no King in Pangasinan” is carrying your history forte a bit too far with a shade of arrogance.

A little humility goes a long way, my friend. May I urge you to re-read my earlier comments. I think you misunderstood the context under which the sentence was used. It was in direct response to another Forum reader, who ‘lectured’ that ‘Pangasinan wants a governor, not a king’ after he went ‘ballistic’ with the word ‘subjects’. It was in no way intended to imply that there never was royalty in Pangasinan in the past.

I know a little bit of history of the province, Mr. Oriel, Jr. I am a Pangasinense, just like you. But thanks for the crash course.

This story tells of a teacher in a remote village up north. His peers have judged him among the best and brightest, an expert in social studies and Philippine history. He is not deterred by the weight of responsibilities entrusted to him in helping train and preparing children to become outstanding citizens.

Class started with him asking, who among you has not heard of words like mandedengoy, nadengoy and dengoyan?

Sensing his pupils perked up, he followed it by saying, if you are asked what colors will you use to describe each word to give it a true meaning? It may help knowing these words are about a con operator, victim (s) and a process.

Edam Gouda was first. I’ll use the rainbow color connection because it exposes Gloria Arroyo at her best. She is a yellow swell headed lady believing people are tickled pink in love with her. She loves gray whenever she wants to duck important issues. She is blue in the face whenever cabinet officials are caught spinning white lies. She sees red in us critical of her antihuman policies. She loves to thunder believing her army can defeat the enemy using kuwitis and labentador!

Next was Velveeta. She summed up her outrage simply by maintaining, I suspect, myself along with million others, ended up nadengoy by this crafty lady. I am coloring it with red as in blood spilling on the streets if her blatant dengoyan antics do not stop.

Class dismissed. All passing congratulations!
