Watching people do their thing in this imbroglio on what Gov. Espin-off tried to change doing business in Pangasinan dialect, I think, everybody missed the point.
Espin-off's speech written in other linguistic derivative, is an offense to the Pangasinense, which he tried to promote. It could be taken, Espin-off took the lowly Pangasinense for granted, on the assumption they wouldn't understand what he was talking about or he could do he damn well pleases. It's like the lion telling cheetah; do what I tell you to do, don't do what I do.
But, let's face the realities of life, as any warm blooded Pangasinense knows, it's not an easy task to change the concept of things that has taken roots in the psyche and culture of the Pangasinense.
Will the Pangasinense change with just a lousy vagary of Espin-off? I know and everybody with common sense knew . . . it's a hoax.
Should everything written in English be translated in the dialect? This is a monster that will swallow Espin-off and those with him with their clothes on.
Case in point: The Register of Deeds and the Assessors Office. Would it be economically feasible to re-write Land Titles and Declarations of Real Property? All business transactions like deeds of sale, mortgages and loans? Will it not create a conflict with English as the medium where every proceedings is based? Wouldn't collide with Tagalog as the national language?
This is unlawful, too, when Espin-off's idea is prejudicial to the Ilocano as the dominant dialect in Pangasinan. How can you disregard the Ilocano when only 5 to 6 towns . . . as now stands . . . are pure Pangasinan out of 50 towns?
Even Espin-off is not pure Pangasinan. He is from Anda, if I'm not mistaken, an Ilocano speaking town. With all the razzmatazz Espin-off tried to impress us, he knew that what he planned all along to change how we communicate with each other, is a farce . . . a mockery. It cannot be done and anybody who believed is doable, is either smoking Hawaiian black or snorting snow from Columbia and drinking moonshine from Mapandan.
Gov. Espin-off thought he is smart, but not adroit enough . . . to get away with murder.
