To Sanny Y. Sanedrin,
You are perfectly right. We, the people of Pangasinan, are called Pangasinense. Our dialect is Pangasinan. We are not to be called Panglatok or Pangalatot. These words are derogatory, derisive, pejorative to Pangasinense.
You may have heard also that they call our dialect/language as Panglatik or Pangalatit or Pangalato. Dear fellow Pangasinense, try this; If somebody asks you from what province are you from and you answered "I am from Pangasinan". Ninety percent of the time the follow -up statement is "So, you are Pangalatot" or " So you are Pangalatot".
I have this. I politely say “People from Pangasinan are called Pangasinense". To my surprise they don't know. They will even defend the words "Pangalatok' or "Pangalatot.". If I tell them "Pangalatok means Pangasinense sira toktok". They are surprised.
These slang words are rampantly used .We must start correcting this. I am glad Gov. Espino used the word "Pangasinense" in his inaugural address.
By the way to facilitate the preservation of Pangasinan dialect is to reserve 30 minutes of classroom teaching of Pangasinan language in high school and elementary, Gov. Espino should call meeting among all Division school superintendents, school principal, school district supervisors to address this issue.
