SAN CARLOS CITY– A convoy of hundreds of motorcycles, jeepneys and private cars brought home on Tuesday the remains of Mayor Julian “Jolly” Resuello from Manila where he died in a hospital following Saturday’s shooting incident.
Thousands of supporters stood waiting to pay their final respects to the slain mayor who served the maximum three consecutive three-year terms and was running as vice mayor for the May 14 midterm election.
Old women wept and buried their teary faces on the shoulders of Jolly’s son, incumbent Vice Mayor Julier “Ayoy” Resuello who, in turn, is running for the mayoralty post.

CRUZ, AGBAYANI CALL FOR VIGILANCE
LINGAYEN– An insidious attempt by some candidates to frustrate the will of the people in some parts of Pangasinan was exposed jointly by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz and Governor Victor Agbayani.
Both leaders called for the holding of honest, orderly, peaceful and credible May 14 elections after they got wind of reports that certain candidates are set to implement “dagdag-bawas” schemes through ballot substitution and or vote-shedding.
Cruz, the highest Catholic official of Pangasinan, warned of possible social upheaval if there is widespread cheating in the polls.

SAN CARLOS CITY — A task force has been formed to administer the day-to-day affairs of the San Carlos City government after having been placed under the control of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The task force is headed by Provincial Elections Supervisor Reddy Balarbar with newly installed San Carlos City Election Officer Remarque Ravanzo and Police Provincial Director Isagani Nerez, a lawyer, as members.
Ravanzo said as a member of the Task Force San Carlos City, his duties will now include administering the affairs of the Local Government Unit (LGU) in addition to his regular work as city election officer.

THE staging of the Kalutan ed Dagupan on April 30 was a raging success with no less than Susan Roces-Poe, actress and widow of former presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr., as the guest of honor.
An estimated 300,000 Dagupeños and visitors spent their most exciting hours during the actual Kalutan where some 25,000 bangus were grilled simultaneously and in the Liket tan Gayaga ed Dalan, touted as the grandest and biggest street party in the region.
“Since Dagupan City is still the titleholder of the Guinness World Record for longest barbecue, the concept of this year’s Kalutan is a grand celebration of the international success that we gained together and made us triumphed as Dagupeños,” said Brian Lim, Bangus Festival 2007 executive chairman.

TAKING a break from his campaign sorties, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. participated in the 2007 Bangus Festival on Tuesday and found himself warmly welcomed by revelers.
De Venecia and his team shook hands with the crowd to also pay tribute to Dagupan’s number one product, bangus, followed by campaigners cheering JAB (short for Joe, mayoralty candidate Al Fernandez and his running-mate for vice mayor Belen Fernandez).
Accompanied by former Immigration Commissioner Al Fernandez and former Councilor Belen Fernandez and members of their team, De Venecia said he was there to join the feast as a Dagupeño and a concerned citizen who has a lot at stake in the bangus industry.

Susan Roces, widow of the late actor-turned-presidential candidate Fernando Poe, Jr., joined the celebration of Dagupan City’s Bangus Festival where she endorsed the candidacy of Mayor Benjie Lim for the fourth congressional district seat.
This developed as the Genuine Opposition (GO) expressed elation over the surge of support for PDP-Laban and GO congressional bet Lim against his opponent, House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr., after the former exposed the alleged massive vote buying operations of the latter through insurance card dole-outs.

A WORLD-class make-up artist and several other balikbayans pledged support to Mayor Benjamin Lim’s candidacy as congressman in the fourth district of Pangasinan.
As a support to their admired official in the city, over 20 balikbayans from London and United States agreed to come home to Dagupan and help campaign for the candidacy of Lim.
One of those who expressed their support to Mayor Lim is Phillip De Vera, the popular make-up artist of showbiz personalities and socialites abroad. Others joining him are Romulo Ceralde, Victor “Bong” Paragas and other relatives of the said balikbayans.

THE petition for disqualification filed by father and son Benjamin and Brian Lim against House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. that the latter’s lawyer filed last Friday before the Commission on Elections in Manila was rejected and instead re-directed its filing with another office.
This was disclosed by Atty. Raul Lambino, legal counsel of Lakas-Christian Democrats and De Venecia himself, saying the lawyer of the petitioners was told to file the petition before the Office of the Provincial Elections Supervisor (PES) in Dagupan City.

STA. BARBARA — Mayoralty candidate General Reynaldo Velasco appears headed to a landslide victory judging from the heavy turn out in his barangay rallies.
This was coupled by bipartisan endorsements and support for him and his team from various political, civic and religious leaders in the town.
Velasco is confident he will get the majority votes of his constituents against comebacking Mayor Carlito Zaplan.
“This political exercise is a great learning experience for me as I have been able to hear up close the sentiments of my kababayans who clamor for new leadership, anchored on new politics of reform, change and performance,” Velasco said.

A THOUSAND participated in the poll watching seminar conducted last Saturday by Atty. Romulo Macalintal, an election law expert, for supporters of Sta. Barbara mayoralty candidate retired Police Director Reynaldo Velasco.
The seminar was aimed at educating and preparing them for their rights and duties in the May 14 elections.
“Poll watchers play a crucial role during elections since they are the so-called watchdog tasked to guard the votes of a political party or a candidate,” said Macalintal who was the election lawyer of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
