Corruption not population

By +Oscar V. Cruz D. D.
“15 Million Pinoys Live on $1/Day”—thus reads and rings the recent headline of a known broadsheet as a finding of the World Bank. A likewise known survey made earlier said that a big majority of the respondents favored the use of contraception for the country… and as expected, vote-hungry politicos hurriedly aligned themselves with anti-population advocates.
Irrespective of their political affiliations, ethical persuasions and/or social beliefs, it can be rightfully said that all anti-population crusaders sing one and the same song: the bigger the population, the more is poverty. The lesser the population, the greater is prosperity.

Living art

I wonder how many of the almost two million Pangasinenses – including those living here in the province, elsewhere in the country, and in other countries – know Francisco Sionil Jose?
And of those who do recognize his name, how many know that he is a child of Pangasinan, Rosales town in particular?
I bet not too many.
F. Sionil Jose, dearly called Manong Frankie, is one of our very few living National Artists for Literature.

Motives
By Emmanuelle
Sometimes, the best can turn out to be your worst. Friends, memories, etcetera. Let me tell you a true story.
To these boys, growing up was parallel to going up the ladder to somewhere up there. And to make the ascent a whole lot easier, theirs were inherited sterling enterprises. There were no bloody sweaty beginnings; just sweaty starts to the day.
Luckily, some success stories work not so adversely for the rest of us mediocre, impoverished lot - these boys’ success was tempered with social conscience. Thanks a lot.
And so, one day, they gazed proudly at the near-finished church they helped rebuilt. It was a task which everybody believed was almost impossible to achieve in this lifetime. For the two boys and their friends, it was a task hurdled through intense, obsessive willpower. They asked themselves then: if we can rebuild these crumbling walls and all within, why, we can also do the same with this town!

Reacting to recent statements of Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim accusing him of engaging in vote-buying and declaring him unfit to continue owing to old age, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. has this to say;
“I am confident of my status as a ‘legend’ in the 4th district”, and Dagupan Mayor Benjamin Lim, is merely in “panic mode”.
De Venecia, in a phone interview with The PUNCH, added “I have done my assignments very well in my district so I need not buy votes.”
Lim has accused De Venecia of vote-buying and said his camp is preparing to file a complaint before the Commission on Election (Comelec).

3 AREAS IN COMELEC WATCHLIST
With less than a month to go before the May 14 election, none of the 44 towns and four cities in the province has so far been put under Commission on Election (Comelec) control due to reported or expected election-related violence.
In 2004, San Carlos City and the towns of Natividad, Rosales, San Manuel, San Nicolas, Tayug and Sual were considered as “areas of concern” and placed under Comelec control by virtue of Resolution Number 6802.
But Reddy Balarbar, election provincial supervisor, told The PUNCH that based on the report of Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, provincial police director, one city and two towns remain in the Comelec’s watchlist, namely: San Carlos City, Natividad and Tayug.
