STO. TOMAS –Notwithstanding the mild effects of El Niño, the country’s agriculture sector is expected to grow by five to six per cent this year.

According to Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, who was in Pangasinan on Wednesday to monitor the province’s agricultural situation,  this year’s target is higher than in previous years but expressed confidence that it can be met considering the government’s commitment to the sector’s growth.

“It is only now that the target is bigger because the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is very focused on agriculture”, he said.

At the same time, Yap said it is crucial to coordinate all efforts in agriculture and for farmers to cooperate by opening their minds to new planting techniques to improve their harvest.

THE Lyceum Northwestern University and the City Government of Dagupan have signed a memorandum of understanding for the comprehensive profiling of the city’s bangus processing industry.

The profiling project was conceptualized by the LNU Research and Development Management Office (RDMO) under its Community Research and Development Program.

“This is LNU’s contribution as an academic institution to research and development in the city,” said LNU president Gonzalo Duque who signed the MOU along with Mayor Benjamin Lim who was represented by his son and chief of staff, Brian Lim.

EARNING the reputation of being a consistent and tough competitor, Mother Goose Special Science High School proved its worth once again when one its students,  Jose Antonio  Pastoral, Region I’s best bet, landed in the “Top 6 Best Individual Science Investigatory Project” during the annual DepEd Phil-Intel Science Fair held in Tagaytay last February 14-16, 2007.

RINGOR & PASTORAL

His research entry entitled “The Anti-Helminthic Properties of Crassostrea Iridalis” impressed the meticulous judges who screened 105 research entries and almost 200 potential scientists all over the country.  Together with his proud coach-instructor, Mrs. Socorro Ringor, Pastoral brought home a trophy and the respect of his fellow researchers.

            Pastoral, a graduating honor student, is the only child of Drs. Antonio and Salome Pastoral of Dagupan City

Go Ednasians! I was an Ednasian before I left to study for high school at the Phil. Science High School, Diliman. I was also one of ESDC’s contestants during MTAP when I was in elementary… Congratulations to the Ednasians! You really have proven EDNAS SCHOOL and of course, EDNASIANS the BEST!

THE YMCA-Dagupan City Karate Team bagged a gold, one silver and five bronze medals in the 2nd series (for 12 years old and above) of the Milo Super Karate Kids held February 25, 2007 at Atriuma, SM Megamall Mandaluyong City.

Leading the winners was Jona Reyes, a senior high school student at the University of Luzon, who captured the gold in the 16 to 17 Girls Kumite and Bronze Kata.

Gerard Martin Tamayo of Dagupan City National High School won the silver in the 12 to 13 Boys, Kata; Jayson Ramil Macaalay of LN Special Science won 2 bronzes in the 14 to 15 Boys Kumite and Kata while John Meverick Edralin of LN-Creative Montessori won 2á bronzes in the 12 to 13 Boys Kumite and Kata.

Dr. Enrico Vasquez, the team’s director, said their members are slowly getting more familiar with the Kobe Osaka International (KOI) rules and patiently playing on their control attacks.
