Emmanuelle’s article on OFWs is just one story after another on this phenomenon that’s happening in the Philippines where human bodies have become the most exportable imports. It’s disconcerting to know that these mostly educated population leaves in droves, in the hundreds and thousands. They put their energy in becoming professionals then travel across the ocean and be what? At most, they become caretakers for the elderly, babysitters, hotel/motel/residential maids, CNAs, Philippine based franchise restaurants’ cooks, chefs, & busboys. And in some countries they’re turned into fly-by-night escorts by their employers.
These masses are usually females with their husbands left behind to raise the kids and enjoy the monthly loot these employers divvy up into the smallest fraction of what their contracts call for. These OFWs do it willingly knowing what’s at stake, but can we really question their choices?
Philippine government has played a major role in this scam. It has given this sector of the population no option but to flee and seek betterment for their livelihood at ALL cost. It’s not just the overseas employers exploiting these people. Our own government has created this chasm, this proliferation of family structure, this exploitation of human needs. And the saddest part of all this, is that no one seems to be doing anything about. These foreign companies and our own government continue to taunt, entice, and sell our own people.
