Mr. Oriel:

Using the same source (Transparency International), the following are the ranking of the Philippines based on the CORRUPTION PERCEPTIONS INDEX: 2001-65 out of 98 countries, 2004-106 out of 145, 2005-120 out of 158 and 2006-126 out of 168.

Had ESTRADA continued to be in power, things could be worst than now but the question is: Is GMA (an economist) performing to make the Philippines much better now than during ESTRADA (just a mere B-movie actor and a dropout)? The ranking above from the source that you cited speaks for itself.

Now Mr. Oriel, tell me who is being untruthful. Next time, do your research better, stick to the issue and be truthful. A may not be as corrupt as E, but if A allows corruption to flourish, it will have the same or worst effect to the people as E.

Mr. Oriel:

Using the same reference (Transparency International), the Philippines was ranked 65 out of 91 as the “Most Corrupt Nation” in 2001(Estrada’s tenure) and became 126 out of 168 in 2006. From the above ranking, was there any improvement or it became worse?

If you read all my postings about corruption during Estrada’s time up to this time, I never said that Estrada is less corrupt than GMA, but GMA is always in the “Starting mode, not first gear in stopping corruption after more than five years that she is in power”.

Allowing corruption under her watch, as long as she is not personally involved, is then alright with you, Mr. Oriel.

Kung ganoon ang mentalidad mo Mr. Oriel nararapat na sabihin mo ito: ” Mga kababayan, basta hindi MASYADONG CORRUPT NA KATULAD NI ESTRADA, puede nang iboto sa Mayo. Pati yong may kaunting “WEAKNESS” puede ring iboto.”

This has nothing to do with the current discussion, but I’m looking for a recipe for “Calasiao Puto”. I’ve searched the net high and low to no avail. I put myself on this diet, you see, and now all I can think of is food. We’ll see how long this ‘07 resolution sticks.

About Philippines politics, I’m confused. Can one just change political party at a drop of a hat? I mean they can go to one party from another because they want to run for that other party’s vacant seat?

And here’s even more baffling, that a political party can actually support or nominate someone who is not affiliated to their party? And have you checked the number of political parties they have? Wow! I wonder if I can run for office through the internet? Hmmm, does anyone out there want to be my running mate? Now what office should I run for? I need food.

Ramon, I share your disgust on the quality of the candidates. Only in the Philippines that anyone without brains (just to make my point) but is good looking, can dance and can sing could be elected, never mind that they don’t know about being a leader and a manager.

Senator Lito Lapid. crap! There goes the Pinoy electorate… People from other countries probably are wondering what’s wrong with the Filipino voter. The people could only speculate why would a wife, son, or daughter would run for an office being vacated by the father. An unfinished business perhaps? They might have found that being in office is a lucrative business, they’re making money off poor Juan Delacruz’s back.

An email of one Harvey S. Keh to Postcript column by Federico Pascual Jr. on the Philippine Star (www.philstaronline.com) on February 15 sums it all up. I believe the Forum readers would find it an interesting reading.

My respects for Mr. Hernani Braganza for speaking his mind about the status of Philippine politics today. I hope that he reconsiders and continue serving the people in the future. With his knowledge of inner workings of the inept and corrupt establishment (the Arroyo administration), he could be a force to help the Philippines to a new direction. What do you say, Mr. Braganza?

Mr. Oriel, ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY: I take responsibility of every word I wrote on Forum. I stand by my word that Gloria Arroyo is an incompetent president. Now don’t accuse me of fabricating anything.

As for your heartburn in regards of Arroyo not being able to run a 7-11 or McDonald’s, that’s your problem. The managers/leaders/owners of these establishments know how to run business. They continuously strive and provide good service to their customers, they make profits. They FIRE their employees if they are incompetent or are caught stealing. Now, if only could Arroyo take a lesson or two from them, or from anyone running a profitable legal business for that matter, it would greatly help her.

It’s a good thing that “you always keep abreast of the current economic and political developments in the Philippines.” I’m baffled that you have missed reading on Arroyo’s performance as a president.

Then again , you are certainly entitled to whatever your own interpretations of what you read. You can believe on whatever you want to believe on. It’s time to move on, Mr. Oriel. May I suggest that you go enjoy the great Canadian outdoors and get a breath of fresh air? Have a nice and sunny southern California day!
