Ramon:
Well, I can feel your pain, your nonplus, the disbelief in the transfer of political power from the former to the latter with nepotistic and oligarchic implications. It is an accepted norm in the Philippines, this monster of corrupted political practice because it’s constitutionally legit. There are no laws to prevent such ongoing precept in the playing field of Philippines’ convoluted democratic election process.
You said, “Democracy means rule of the people not the family”. You’re absolutely right. However, you have to realize families like the Tulagans of the 3rd district, the father and son Resuellos of San Carlos, the wife and husband Agbayanis at Urduja, the husband and wife Zaplans of Santa Barbara, the Villars of Santo Tomas and lots of them out there are people, too. How can you stop members of these families to run for public office? Nothing to bar their way and how the electoral procedure is set-up it’s just how you play the game. And the game is the shell game. Now you see, now you don’t.
Bottom line for all of these Ramon, is the mighty moolah. Who has it are the only qualified to run. Forget the intelligence of a candidate, the education, his/her dedication to public service if principles are only the foundation to seek elected office. Spit in the bucket. Nothing more than a dream passing in the wind.
Furthermore, what I know in my place yards and houses before the election, you can see signs, “Votes for sale”. That’s how low of the lowest the Philippines have become.
