Of course, Mr. Delfin, we are all entitled to our own opinion. We also reserve the right to either accept or refuse the opinion of others depending on their truthfulness, ethical value, righteousness, usefulness and sense. We must not believe everything we read or heard. Some of them can poison or corrupt our minds.

Some symptoms that I know are useless anxieties, stressful life and deadly election fever. Words are foods for the brain but there are many places, especially the internet, where people spread lies and use obscene and defamatory words. We must be careful because foods like drugs or medicines can either make us well or harm us. The pen is mightier than the sword. Words can definitely enlighten or destroy people.

Greek physician Hippocrates, aka Father of Medicine said, “Let food be your medicine and let your medicine be food.” We need food for nourishment. Unfortunately, there are plenty of existing unhealthy and toxic foods that can poison the mind, body or spirit.

Jess Delfin
5 Feb 2007

There you go again, Mr. Oriel. Certainly you are entitled to your own opinion and completely refuse my point of view or anybody’s opinion for that matter. I’m sure all your prayers will cure the ignorant Filipino VOTER to now look at the issues at hand and will elect only the candidates who will not rob them blind. On my last post, I should have said, the The Filipino VOTER chose to be ignorant. I stand corrected on that matter.

Lastly, it is not my dilemma. It’s the poor Pinoy’s dilemma. Then again, they don’t have to worry about anything because they will have your continuous prayers that will guide them on their quest to search for a better future. I am sure that these incompetent and corrupt government leaders will now magically change from their wicked ways and now follow the path of enlightenment that was inspired by you.

Virus alert

HEALTH officials at the national and local levels have had their hands full over the last couple of weeks with the rash of illnesses affecting whole barangays in different parts of the country. The most prominent has been diarrhea - worsening even to dysentery level - in Bohol and Quezon. There were also reports of dengue virus incidents in several other provinces.

The most disturbing of these is the case of Loon, Bohol not only because of the number of people - both adults and children, but mostly children - affected but due to the fact that this barangay was awarded a Gantimpalang  Paglilingkod Pook (Gawad Galing Pook) recognition in 1997 for its Waterworks System Development and Expansion. How ironic that ten years later, a water-borne disease would down people and claim lives in the community. Among other things, this teaches us that we cannot just relax and rest on our laurels, especially when it concerns health issues.

While these recent outbreaks are nowhere close to our home province, it still summons up memories of our own dengue crisis late last year wherein close to a thousand people were affected. The previous year, the number even went beyond the thousand marks. And going back a year further, remember the acute gastro enteritis and cholera epidemic in 2004 which hit Malasiqui and San Carlos?

Wanted: the “first” to howl on landgrabbing

By Ermin Garcia Jr.

In his “open letter” to me (which I know has already seen print in other publications and discussed in some radio stations) in reaction to my column item two weeks ago, Mr. Nicanor O. Melecio, who styles himself as “MBM, Professor, Environment and Land Use Planning /Business Policy, Graduate School, University of Luzon,” asked: “Why single me out to howl first?” (referring to my wonderment why he has not said a word about the land-racket involving accreted lands in Tondaligan Park).

I sense that he is adamant about not being the first meaning he’d gladly talk only if others talk first.  Well, at least am glad he confirmed our information about the on-going racketeering inside DENR in collusion with city hall brass and “friends of the boss”, he just refuses to be the first!  So, OK, let’s respect Mr. Melecio’s request - to be the second or third, and not the first. Puede na!  I only regret he wasted space (and airtime) attributing ill motives to my comments instead of delivering what was expected of him. Or was I wrong to think that as the “professor” cum “environment expert” on environment and land use he would contribute the most in digging deeper into the beachfront sale racket?  I was certain he would be the first to smell the stench being the city’s P20,000 a month consultant on environment affairs but from the way he reacted, it appears that his services are being retained precisely so he wont ever be the first to speak out on the racketeering inside city hall.

Traffic problems still unresolved

By Gerry Garcia

COMMITTEE executives tasked with recovering sidewalks for pedestrian use, especially in the city’s major streets, should focus attention on places where more people tend to flock in sheer number owing to the presence in the area of establishments or institutions catering to their various needs, like hospitals, schools, etc.

Nable Street, for instance, starting from the foot of the Quintos Bridge leading to the Pangasinan Medical Center and UPang, is always brisk with people going to the hospital and the university, most of whom are car-riding visitors from outside the city faced with a common problem: finding a place to park the car.

In that short street of Nable leading to both institutions the needed parking space is often usurped by sidewalk eateries which often do their cooking on the street shoulder… and serving their customers also in the same spot.

Available parking space offered by Victoria Hotel in the same vicinity is unfortunately not often available… despite the parking fee.

Coalitions and local skirmishes

By Jun Velasco

POLITICAL coalitions, for good or ill, are becoming fashionable these days.  Is this proof that our quest for political understanding and unity has been achieved?

Nope! The more experienced say the “coalition phenomena” are a smokescreen for political convenience and cheap accommodation, which best describes our current political system.

This malpractice will reach extreme proportions because there is no law against it.  Everything on its account will be dismissed as “natural”, normal, part of the game, which, if you look hard enough, the democratic ideal.

The proposed charter change was supposed to put an end to this political oddity, but the Supreme Court by a one-vote majority dashed it to pieces.

So, what now?

Mr. Delfin, thanks, but no thanks to what you are trying to point out to me and probably to others. I completely refuse to accept your own point of view because it is very obvious that you are looking at the Philippines and its people from a very different perspective than mine. I am sorry to say that you have the tendency to see, anticipate, or emphasize only bad or undesirable outcomes, results, conditions and problems, etc. In addition, you seem to be enjoying something that I do not take pleasure in. I am referring to name callings, the use of abusive names to belittle or humiliate another person in an argument or political campaign, etc.

Contrary to what you said, Filipinos are not ignorant. Filipinos are often bright but there are many who have very naïve attitude towards politics as shown by their tendency to believe everything they read and heard. With this kind of attitude, they surely can be easily mislead by others who will take advantage of their naivety and unsophistication of not realizing that some people are using their pessimistic views as their tools to pull down others in order to get ahead of the rest.

In comparison to your views, from my own point of view I can see the more favorable side of events or conditions that is why I have high hopes and dreams for my beloved Philippines and its people. I am expecting the most favorable outcome. I strongly believe that goodness pervades reality and that good people will ultimately predominates over evil in the world. I admire those who expose wrongdoings and the performance by public officials of acts that is legally unjustified, harmful, or contrary to law and in violation of public trust.

On the other hand, I have no respect at all to those who mislead others by making false allegations without concrete evidence with apparent cutthroat behavior of pulling others down in their quest for success. Certainly, Mr. Delfin, we are all entitled to our own opinion. Unfortunately, there are so many who are so pessimistic and never give a damn if their opinions will have negative impact to the community. I feel that their pessimism about the future of the Philippines are so depressing and demoralizing for the country and its people.

I strongly believe that it is more inspiring and empowering to be optimistic by not losing hope and continually praying for it. We must use the power of good intentions to keep us focused on the prosperity, abundance, and love that constantly surrounds us! Dr. Wayne W. Dyer puts it best when he says, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.”

Lastly, Mr. Delfin, your dilemma is: “Who has not been tainted with corruption and malfeasance? Who in the Philippines today could claim that honor? Who could judge and execute?” Personally, it is not a dilemma at all once you stop depending on elders who should be ashamed of their inappropriate legacy they are leaving to the next generations. For all you know, there are millions of Filipinos who are not yet tainted with corruptions and malfeasances. All you need to do is to look around us and not to be so blind to see the children who are full of hopes and dreams as if there are no problems in the world. Are you not counting the newly born Filipinos who in the future will need real good role models? They should be protected from those who are good in pretending and acting as if they care when in reality they do not give a damn. They should not be exposed and influenced by those who are actually troubles masquerading as solutions to the tribulations devastating the country and its people.

Service at its best

By Gonzalo Duque

HAVING observed the Philippine Medical Association of Georgia’s medical mission in Cebu and recently, at the Regional Medical Center headed by Dr. Jess Canto, hospital director, I know that I have seen something that has struck me forever.

The nobility and spirituality of service.

I saw the group’s other-centeredness, as members of the mission that included my sister Dr. Grace D. Dizon went about their chores in a very pleasant, enjoyable and missionary manner.

Are missionaries the enjoyable type of people? I say yes. I have seen them. I have talked to this group even while they were undertaking their medical safari in Cebu last year.

Step towards the right direction

By Al S. Mendoza

UP TO NOW, the issue of which route to take to pave the way for basketball unity in the land is as blurred as the vision for reconciliation in our politically fractured nation.

That’s because of just one association that has long been declared out of commission. Candles had been lit for the eternal repose of its soul.

I refer once again to the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).

Expelled nearly two years ago by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the BAP continues to swim its way into perilous waters as though it wants to pull Philippine basketball down into the deep recesses of extinction.

My view is that when you’ve been kicked out by your own constituents, what’s the point in insisting to stay afloat?
