“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”, wrote Emma Lazarus.Yes, this quote appears on the Statue of Liberty but at the time France presented the statue to the U.S. times were different. The U.S. was not being overrun by illegal immigrants. Those who came from Europe were detained on Ellis Island while their papers were processed and those coming from the Pacific were kept on Angel Island until they were cleared.
I am not against immigration. My paternal grandparents came from Portugal while my mother and also my wife came from the Philippines. Although I was born American citizen, I was born in San Fernando La Union. My concern is for the Filipinos who must now wait nearly 30 years to be reunited with their relatives in the U.S. The cause of this is being caused by illegals streaming into the country.
Sure, the majority of these illegals are looking for a better life but their quest has been harmful not only to those trying to enter the U.S. legally but to the tax payers who must supply them with medical and other social services. As far as my political affiliation, I consider myself a Ronald Reagan Republican. I am conservative stuck in an area populated with a bunch of liberals who, among other things, believe men and women can marry their own sex or paint an image of Our Lord with feces. I always look forward to returning to Pangasinan several times a year.
For all the political turbulence in Manila, at least the vast majority in the province are honest God fearing people. I am always amazed to see people enduring hardships yet continue to be, with few exceptions, honest, kind, and willing to give a helping hand to others when it is needed.
