A math lesson on population

Here's a simple math lesson - okay, both of you who are still with me, here's another statistics that you'll probably never use unless you're on Jeopardy or something.

On October 17, 2006, US population is expected to reach 33,000,000,000. Its significance can only be appreciated when put into perspective we can all relate to. The Philippines has a whopping 87,000,000 population. This ratio is almost three to one, which means, for every three people in the US there's one Filipino back home. To put it in another perspective, Philippines’ land mass is about the size of California. If you're a Californian, then picture driving from the southernmost tip of San Diego County to the foothills of Mt. Shasta and drive around the eastside of the Sierras all the way to the coast of San Luis Obispo.

Guess how many people reside in the Golden state, just a mere three million. That 3:1 ratio I mentioned earlier, that one Filipino back home, there's a big chance that he's our kabaleyan. Pangasinan leads the nation, as far as the highest population per province, folks - that's over two million.

To segue into another topic, even if only a fraction of this two million reside in and around Bayambang, imagine the amount of garbage they can generate. Whatever happened to that old saying, "pick up after yourself"? How about taking care of our OWN basura?
