AGUILAR- Warning! Watching Manny “Pacman” Paquiao fight can be hazardous to your health.
But this warning came too late Danny Tiangson, 53, of barangay Pogonsili who died even before Pacquiao could be proclaimed the winner by a unanimous
decision.
According to the victim’s relatives, Tiangson, a certified Pacquiao fanatic, said he was watching his idol’s fight on television last July 2 when he suffered a stroke.
They recalled that Tiangson was so affected and began having difficulty breathing when Pacquiao was being pummeled and pushed to the ropes by Oscar Larios in the third round.
His wife, Virgie, promptly gave him medicine and he continued watching the fight.

Killer quake aftermath
Dagupan not sinking
- Death toll: 48;
- Missing, 14;
- Injured, 24
- P4 B needed, rehab work starts;
- Business paralyzed
- Classes still suspended;
- Relief distribution on
Authorities dismissed as products of wild imagination reports that the quake-devastated Dagupan City will sink, saying there is no scientific basis for residents to flee the city despite threats posed by tremors and aftershocks.
Romy Torres, a spokesman of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, rushed to the city last Thursday to allay fears that Dagupan City will be reclaimed by the sea.
He motored to barangays Lasip Grande and Pogo Chico to conduct a study on the effects of the killer earthquake whose ruins entombed 2 meters hundreds of residential buildings in the areas.
Fourth District Rep. Jose de Venecia, Jr. explained that the case of those villages was a natural phenomenon, which occurred in all affected zones across Luzon, citing the downtown area where soils spewed hot mud.
Mayor Liberato Reyna Sr. and Vice Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr. branded reports that the city will be erased from the map as “Barbershop tales”.
The quake’s death toll rose to 48 as of yesterday. Twenty four were reported injured, while 14 others remain unaccounted for.
The disaster left more than 2,000 families homeless in Pangasinan and its two cities.
The task force on rehabilitation and reconstruction created by Gov. Rafael M. Colet and Reyna confirmed De Venecia’s assessment the city alone suffered damages in private and government properties.
The task force is chaired by Fernandez as executive officer with Colet and Reyna as co-chairmen.
City engineering crewmen last Friday failed to dig out bodies of two tricycle drivers and a cigarette vendor believed entombed by fallen tower and a huge slab of the old St. John Cathedral here.
Twelve evacuation centers, mostly in public elementary schools, were set up as residents of several barangays, including Pantal, fled their homes. Some were accommodated at the Catholic Church in Lingayen.

DECORP, PLDT, DIGITEL WORRY
Child scavengers tagged as suspects
Initially, the cable-theft syndicates targeted phone cables. Recently, they have started to cut off electric cables as well.
Alarmed by the growing number of cable theft cases in Dagupan, city officials met with representatives of public utilities last Wednesday to map out an action plan against cable thieves who managed to operate with impunity despite the formation by the police of Task Force Spaghetti.
This time, the primary victims include Dagupan Electric Corporation in addition to the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and the Digital Communications of the Philippines.
The DECORP said that the syndicates have become more emboldened even at the risk of being electrocuted, cutting hanging electric wires and grounding cable wires of Decorp.
It also warned the public against innocent-looking scavengers loitering along the highways at day time as they could be part of the notorious syndicates targeting cables.
A study conducted by Decorp stated that most of the cable thieves operating in the province are minors aged 12 to 15, called “sako boys”, and are usually operating at day time.

The Arroyo government got it all wrong. The stand of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on the impeachment issue is not what her officials think it is.
This was the reaction of Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz to the initial statements issued by presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye.
Cruz, a former CBCP president, said the CBCP’s stand that said it is “not inclined to support the impeachment at this time” in fact meant to impress upon the laity that impeachment is futile and unproductive because Congress is made up of too many pro-administration congressmen and consequently impeachment will be simply be thrown out of the window.”
“The truth is not borne out by how many or by sheer numbers,” he said.
He clarified that the bishops “did not deem it useful to promote impeachment due to the experience last year when the impeachment cases were just thrown out and denied merely on account of numbers of congressmen who were allies of President Arroyo.”

LINGAYEN - Typhoon “Florita” brought heavy rains throughout Pangasinan and as of Friday p.m. almost triggered the release of water from the San Roque Multi-Purpose Project in San Manuel town and could have resulted in another deluge and catastrophe in the eastern and central parts of the province.
As of 7:00 p.m. Friday, water level at San Roque dam was measured at 248 or still 32 meters below the critical level of 280 meters, the level that will signal the start of a calculated discharge of water from the down the lower stream of the Agno River.
The San Roque dam held on even as the Ambuklao dam in Bokod, Benguet opened its four gates at eight meters and the Binga dam in Itogon, Benguet at five gates by 10 meters.
The water being released by both Ambuklao and Binga was being absorbed by the San Roque dam. This caused the rise of water at the San Roque dam reservoir at the rate of 0.7 meters per hour.
However, despite the non-release of water of the San Roque dam, the towns of Sta. Barbara and Calasiao were already inundated as a result of the swelling of the Sinocalan river .
Officials of the San Roque Power Corporation, which operates the San Roque dam, again denied that it is responsible for the flood in central Pangasinan, which is quite a distance from the San Roque dam.

THE chronic absenteeism of members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod has turned from bad to worse.
This was gleaned from record of attendance of the city aldermen from January 9 to July 10 this year, a copy of which was obtained by the PUNCH.
The city council scheduled 23 regular sessions over the period stated, but 10 sessions were adjourned for lack of quorum. There were two special sessions called, but one was adjourned for lack of quorum.
The record shows that Councilor Teofilo Guadiz III was again top absentee with 12 unexcused absences, 1 “on-leave” (OL) and 2 “on-sick leave” (OSL), or attended only 10 of 25 scheduled regular and special sessions.
He is followed by Councilor Librada Reyna with 10 unexcused absences, 1 OSL and 2 official businesses (OBs).
Absences listed as “Official business” are not counted because the officials are presumed to be out of town relative to their official functions as officials of the city.

Not all bad things come from politicians and not all good things come from the Church.
Recently, Senator Manuel Villar introduced SB 1441 which would change the beginning of the school year from June to September. This simple change will result in less injuries and illness to the students and their teachers. The rainy seasons have always brought drowning, flooding and landslides. If Sen. Villars’s bill is enacted and it saves one life, we shall owe him a debt of gratitude.
The recent proclamation by the Church for the impeachment of President is completely out of line. The church should be concentrating on saving souls, not destroying the country. The late Cardinal Sin sought and succeeded in ousting the late Pres. Marcos. Is the Philippines any better now? The Church would be raising hell if the government interfered with the doings of the Church; likewise, the Church should not be interfering with non-church business.
