Recently, in exposing my name, Union City was made to look as part of the “Barbary Coast.” I did not mind my name being exposed because as I have previously shown that no-ones’a identity can be kept secret in our modern world. I did take exception to associating Union City with the Barbary Coast. The Barbary Coast was located in the San Francisco wharf areas of yore. During the 1800 hundreds men visiting that area were “shanghaied” (kidnapped) to work on the sailing ships of that time. Later, during the ’50’s and ’60’s an area located in the Broadway and Kearney Street area was also called “The Barbary Coast.” This area was eventually closed because of the prostitution and other illegal acts that were taking place in that area. Also, on Kearney Street several blocks from Broadway was the International Hotel, which was the sight of many demonstrations to prevent its eventual demolition. Mostly immigrant Filipino and Chinese men lived at that hotel.
Union City is located about 40 miles east from San Francisco. It is separated from San Francisco by the Francisco Bay. Union City demographics show it as having an annual average household income of $85,000 as compared to a U.S. average of $48,700. 45 percent of the Union City population are of Asian descend. Also, on average, Asians possess the higher priced homes, higher income and education than other Union City residents. The City has been named “An All American City” and James Logan High School, the largest high school in the San Francisco-Bay Area, has received several national recognitions.
Under the leadership of Mayor Mark Green the city has seen large economical and social growth. He continues to be reelected because of the job he is doing. He also has very close ties with the Filipino community.
No, Union City is no Barbary Coast. Far from it.
