Imagine a respectable news magazine breaking the news of the mad cow disease making it to the contiguous United States. Pandemonium happens. The public stops buying Big Macs, the beef industry takes a dive, ergo the economy is devastated.
This scenario is a stretch, but it could very well be the fish industry in Dagupan. I can understand Mayor Lim’s concern. We are talking about the livelihood of hundreds, if not thousands of individuals who depend on this commodity’s palatable appeal. But what I don’t understand is the mayor’s callous disregard for public safety or his choice of words towards Sunday Punch. If Mayor Lim’s head and heart are in the right place, then he needs to start drafting a letter of apology not just for Sunday Punch but also for the general public. He also needs to launch an all out study on how widespread the problem really is. In one of the sites mentioned, coliform was found to be 48 times higher than the acceptable number! What are the possible health risks involved with these kinds of numbers? Other than staying away from seafood completely, what preventative measures should the public take? Does he have a plan of attack to solve this problem?
Mayor Lim, are you listening?
