Dieting the 'write' way

A prominent Panga-sinan nutritionist Saturday urged the government to address the problem of obesity among pre-school and school children, because they are the future diabetics.
Catherine B. Velasco, former back-to-back “most outstanding nutritionist awardee of the Philippines in 1997 and 1999 by the National Nutritionist Dietitians Ass’n of the Philippines, was featured in the October 2004 issue of the Readers Digest for her comments on food and nutrition.
She recently told a symposium in a Camiling, Tarlac hospital where she is expected to hold diet clinic soon, that a WHO report had warned that some 350 million people are expected to contract obesity and other cardiovascular diseases because of wrong eating habits. If you have trouble sticking to a diet, it may be because you like most people underestimate the amount you eat.
Filipino nutritionist Catherine B. Velasco says writing down what you eat each day can help you lose weight.
Although this method is not clinically proven, experts agree that keeping a diary heightens awareness of your food intake, the first step to changing your eating habits. identify your problem areas, such as an addiction to soft drinks or fatty foods, says Velasco. Circle them in red so you remember what not to include in your next meal.
She also suggests:
*Estimate the energy content of everything you eat with a kilojoule counter or the nutritional label on the package.
*Weigh yourself every two weeks and keep a page in your diary where you can monitor your weight.
*Review your diary before going to bed.?
Velasco finished BS in Nutrition at the University of Pangasinan magna cum laude, where she distinguished herself as a writer, declaimer, and orator. She graduated from the elementary to high school as a valedictorian. A former dean of tourism at the Lyceum Northwestern University and a professor at the UPANG, she is completing her doctorate degree at the Benguet State University.
