WAS it a case of a bad teaching system or a case of unprepared and unmotivated pupils?
With only about 50 per cent of pupils who graduate from various elementary schools in the city passed the High School Readiness Test (HSRT) given by the Dagupan City Schools last May 24, the question has begun to nag both parents and teachers.
At presstime, the names of the pupils who passed and those who failed the test were not available in the report obtained by the PUNCH.
City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Aurora Domingo said that as of Thursday, they are still awaiting the final list expected from Manila.
The pupils who took the test are also awaiting the results to find out if they need to enroll in high school or take the prescribed bridge program for one year that will focus on English, Science and Mathematics subjects.
The implementation of the bridge program was, however, protested by parents and pupils, saying that it is the wrong way to obtain proficiency on focused subjects.
The League of Filipino Students is now conducting a signature campaign nationwide calling the Department of Education to scrap the bridge program for being “anti-student and anti-Filipino.”
Domingo said that under the bridge program, students will have only three subjects to take, making them more proficient in English, Science and Mathemathics. -Analiza Q. Leyba
