`Chedeng` exacts heavy toll in Dagupan, Pangasinan

LINGAYEN-Typhoon Chedeng and the heavy rains it brought left 39 municipalities underwater, caused deaths to 12 persons killed and P49,197,060 worth of losses in fisheries, livestock, crops and infrastructure.
Based on a report from the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) submitted to Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes, chairman of the National Disaster Coordinating Council when President Gloria Arroyo, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr, and a host of national officials visited Urdaneta and Dagupan last Thursday, it said that about 394 barangays were affected, displacing about 35,293 families or about 160,250 persons. About 52 houses were totally damaged and another 223 houses partially damaged.
Heavily damaged was fisheries with P31,109,400 followed by infrastructure with P17,540,000, livestock with P511,440 and crops at P31,109,400.
The casualties were identified as Arthur Sinogat, 45, Virgie Salud, 40 of Lipa City, Batangas who were traversing the national highway in Sta. Barbara town when a giant mango tree fell on the owner type jeep they were riding in. Their companion Alvin de Leon, 35 was injured and rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital in Urdaneta City.
The other fatalities were: Marcelina Hidalgo, 44 of Amagbagan, Sison who was struck by lightning, Lorenzo recites, 44 of barangay Bantog, Asingan who was bitten by a snake, siblings Daphne Cabar, 13 and Jinky Cabar, 15 of barangay Labit, Urdaneta City , Alexander Mandapat of barangay Talospatang, Malasiqui, Joseph Bautista of barangay Longos Central and Gerard Aquino of barangay Sagud Bahley, both in San Fabian who drowned.
In Dagupan City, Juan Mejia of Salisay died of heart attack ad floodwaters rose and Armando Santos of Rivera st. was electrocuted.
Still missing as of press time were Geremy Maniago, 27, Salvador Cubol, 27, Retero Quintero, 24, a certain Michael , 22 and Melvin Navarro, 19 who went ashore at the height of the typhoon. Three of their companions have been recovered alive.
Meanwhile, President Gloria Arroyo promised to replace the damage to properties in aquaculture sector in Dagupan City and some parts of Pangasinan by giving three million bangus fry and one million tilapia fry.
Arroyo gave P5 million to Urdaneta City for the reconstruction of the market razed by fire early this month and another P5 million to Dagupan City as down payment for the purchase of modern dredging machine to dredge the silt from the city’s river system.
The president also directed Agriculture Secretary Luis Lorenzo and Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman who went with her to Pasngasinan to provide 300 sacks of rice to the affected families in Dagupan .
Mayor Benjamin Lim said that 24 out of 31 barangays were underwater and 10,000 families or 40,000 persons were affected by the flood.
The typhoon damaged some P50 to P60 million worth of properties, excluding damage to private properties, Lim said. –ECV
