THE new fishery ordinance for Dagupan City has  been approved on second reading by the Sangguniang Panlungsod  but it may take two weeks before it can be enacted due to some amendments,  Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez said.

The new fishery code is being pushed by Mayor Benjamin Lim to systematize aquaculture and improve production and quality of marine products here.

"We are working extra hard to pass the ordinance in response to the appeal of the city mayor," Fernandez said. The councilors adjourned by 11 p.m. in their regular session Monday and resumed the following day from 1 to 6 pm.

"It is good as approved, but we only need to wait for the insertion of the amendments before the third and final reading," Fernandez said.

Councilor Teofilo "Jojo" Guadiz III, committee chairman on Laws and Ordinances and Judiciary of the city's legislative  body, said  prior to the submission of his committee report of the ordinance, he underwent tedious review of the proposed fishery code submitted by a consultant hired by the City Mayor's Office.

Guadiz even went on an educational tour in Saranggani and Bacolod to validate the findings of Cruz Aquaculture Consultancy firm. He  said that the consultancy firm  based its study in the two areas.

"With the new development and the renewed audacity of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, I am optimistic that this fishery ordinance will be passed by the SP in the final reading next week." Guadiz said.
