A new alternate road to Mangaldan from Dagupan was opened with the inauguration Thursday of the newly completed bridge linking barangay Mamalingling in Dagupan to Maasin in Mangaldan.
An all-steel rust-proof bridge, it is the first in Pangasinan using the Mabey and Johnson bridge building technology, said Engr. Sylvia Galang of the Department of Public Works and Highways. Its slabs are also made of steel.
The bridge was funded by the British government at P14.2 million with counterpart from House Speaker Jose C. de Venecia, Jr. who initiated the project as part of his program to spur development in the fourth district of Pangasinan .
The bridge is 36 meters long and four meters wide and could accommodate a 25-ton limit, she said.
Construction of the project started December 28 last year and completed September 18 very much ahead of schedule.
With de Venecia in inaugurating the project are Mayors Benjamin Lim of Dagupan City and Tito Sarzaba of Mangaldan and their fellow officials.
Both mayors said the bridge would be a big boon to the development of their places’ interior barangays as there would be faster flow of goods and products from the farms to the markets.
Mayor Sarzaba thanked de Venecia for initiating the project as it will surely hasten the drab pace of life in western barangays of Mangaldan that are producing agricultural products, including bangus.
Aside from this, it will be an alternate road from Mangaldan to Dagupan and vice versa if the old national road clogs up because of heavy vehicular traffic.
