It takes a lot of patience, hardwork and perseverance for a person to attain his goal and succeed. And Conrado G. Matias is one who had all of them.
A successful businessman, he is proud of his humble beginnings as he remembers toiling against the hardships he’d been through during his early years.
Condring, as he is called by friends, is a self-made man who is successful in the construction business (CGM Construction) and the operation of a hotel (Arizona Inn) in Dagupan City although he admitted he admitted he was not able to finish college.
Born to a modest family, he was the youngest of four children who were raised solely by their teacher-mother. In the midst of the family’s limited resources, he volunteered to help by selling sweepstakes tickets and newspapers n while he was still in the elementary grades.
While in the secondary level, he also worked as driver /conductor for Lingayen-Dagupan mini-buses to support his studies.”My good friend and townmate from Lingayen, Albertini de Guzman, can attest to how we struggled early in life to realize our dreams,” he said.
He was a Commerce student at the Luzon Colleges when he decided to work full -time and went to Manila to try his luck as sales agent for a cigarette company.
His marriage to Arceli Llamas Arcinue with whom he has six children, brought him greater challenges. But he found a very supportive wife in her who assisted him in his endeavors.
With only P10,000 seed money loaned from his in-laws, he opened a minimart and canteen in Dagupan City in 1976. He was an all-around man who served as cook and waiter as well. He also helped manage the commercial building of his wife’s family that enabled him to meet more people.
Later, he was asked by his in-laws to help in their construction business. He served as the company’s liason officer and slowly he learned the trade while earning the friendship and confidence of the local officials he dealt with. And not long after, he was into the construction business himself. He hired engineers to help him with his projects, majority of which are government infrastractures.
For him nothing is impossible. “If one is determined and ready to work hard, he will be able to attain his goals in due time,” he said.
And for one who grew up with less in life, he is willing to help other people, especially deserving students. He is generous to friends who find in him a true friend in time of need.
With all his achievements, he has remained a simple man. He enjoys planting fruit trees in his new farm house as he enjoys helping other people in his own simple way.
But one thing is sure, he’s gone a long way and will continue to reap success as he ventures to other fields in order to help more people.
