URDANETA CITY-They are the most ostracized sector of society but they are regarded as very productive in their chosen fields of endeavor. For the first time in region I, the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) conducted a two-day seminar last Feb. 2- 3 at the Urdaneta High School in Urdaneta city on cooperativism for the city’s gay sector .
With an initial 60 members, third -sex members here formed the Urdaneta Gay Multi-purpose Cooperative and elected their board of directors.
Its elected chairman, Jhodel Adviento who’s on “her” 20s and is managing a beauty salon named Magic Touch at the Magic Mall this city, said “her” colleagues also elected their respective chairmen for committees on credit, audit and inventory, election, mediation, education/training.
They will formally graduate from their training course sponsored by fifth district Rep. Amadito Perez Jr. on Feb.10 which will also coincide with their induction program.
Filomeno Rosario, former provincial agriculturist of Pangasinan who is working with Perez’ district office on cooperative formation, said the gays plan to engage in lending money or operating beauty salons or sari-sari stores. I’ve known Rosario since he was still working with the provincial government and I call him Manong Bert. Whenever we see each other, he always has interesting stories to share.
“I think they will be effective in lending because gays are strict in collecting money from their debtors and have that tendency to scandalize those who are not paying their dues,” Rosario said.
He added that gays here have been very active especially during city fiesta celebrations as one night is devoted for them as Gay Night every year.
The cooperative’s members, all from this city, are under voting age.
During the seminar, Rosario said there was a “happy and gay” discussion of topics provided by no less than CDA Regional Director Ernesto Rosario.
Rosario said that with this project, Perez expects that gays will be more respected as model citizens in their city for being responsible to their new roles.
This corner gives our “sisters” a high five. Appear!
